Buying Vis Bellica

I have re-vamped and updated the page where you can buy VB and the various army lists (and the WW2 scenario packs I've written for IABSM). Some of the buttons didn't look or work quite right...but they do now!

3rd May 2006

Armies Gallery Peter and Petra Schulein have sent in pictures of their Indian and Parthian armies in 15mm. Some great little vignettes are included in both.

17th April 2006

Vis Lardica I have added a link to my new WW2 wargaming website: Vis Lardica.

VL is dedicated to the I Ain't Been Shot, Mum! rules for Company level WW2 wargaming from the TooFatLardies.

16th April 2006

Armies Gallery My Macedonian/Successors have joined the Armies Gallery.

14th April 2006

Armies Gallery I've added my Hoplite Greeks to the Armies Gallery.

9th April 2006

Armies Gallery Dick Bax, from the Nederlands, has sent in the gallery for his 15mm Augustan Romans:  a mighty 1200 points worth of figures. Looks fantastic!

8th April 2006

Armies Gallery And now the Sassanids are up there are well!

5th April 2006

Armies Gallery My 15mm Assyrians have joined the Egyptians in the Armies Gallery. More to follow!

4th April 2006

Armies Gallery I have added a new section to the website: a gallery for your Vis Bellica armies. The gallery currently contains only two armies: Holger Doebold's excellent 25mm Hoplite Greeks and a new page showing my own 15mm New Kingdom Egyptians.

You'll see that the Armies Gallery follows a set format: a commentary by the army's owner followed by a catalogue selection of close-up pictures of the figures themselves. The Gallery section will be saved for more ad hoc pictures.

I'll be adding my other armies as soon as I get the chance, but do feel free to send in examples of your own work to me at webmaster@visbellica.com

Army Statistics A quick victory for the Parthians over the Indians added.

Battle Reports

I have finally got around to putting up the report from the 2005 Society of Ancients Battle Day:  the Sambre, 57BC.

Apologies for the lateness, but I did promise to wait until the report had appeared in Slingshot, and then got sidetracked by "normal life" myself!

29th November 2005

Army Statistics Paul Demery reports that his Carthaginians narrowly beat an Indian army at his club last night. A very close game, but the Carthaginian flanking cavalry arrived just in time. Sounds familiar!
Scenarios The newly re-vamped Wargames Journal have re-formatted and re-printed my Carrhae scenario. It's a free download, so make sure you take a look. Best of luck for future issues to Neil, Tom and the others at WJ.

Army Statistics Two more battle results added.

23rd September 2005

Battle Reports

An excellent battle report from the Huntingdon Club added. Well, half a battle report. Well, a report on half a battle. Ah, open the thing and read it: you'll see what I mean!

Army Statistics Three more battle results added.

Battle Reports

Accounts of three battles added.

6th September 2005

Army Statistics A handful of battle results added to the Army Statistics page.  Keep them coming!
Army Lists

I've added some notes on why the legionaries of the Republican (Camillan) Roman army list are graded as they are.

Battle Reports

Two reports added: a couple of Republican Roman vs Spanish games; and a hugely photographic report from the Jackson Gamers covering a Norman vs Byzantine bash.

29th July 2005

Gallery I've added another batch of Holger's photographs. More to come!
Buying Vis Bellica

I have added the WW2 "Vyazma or Bust" Scenario Booklet to the list of Ordered Flexibility products available to buy.  Although designed for TFL's "I Ain't Been Shot, Mum!" rules, I did write it so feel perfectly justified in listing it here!

19th July 2005

Gallery The first batch of photographs of Holger Doebold's incredible collection of Vis Bellica based 28mm Hoplites.  Makes me want to sell all my 15's and move up to a proper scale!
Updates A long time since the last update.  My apologies for that, but I've been busy on the Eastern Front!

Lots of material to catch-up on, though, so keep checking back for the latest material.

SOA Battle Day: Sambre

Yesterday was the second Society of Ancients Battle Day:  a battle is chosen and is fought with as many different rule sets as possible.

Last year's battle was Gaugamela (see report), this year's was the Battle of the Sambre:  where six legions of Julius Caesar's Romans were surprised by 80,000 Belgae, but recovered enough to give the Gauls a jolly good spanking!

Vis Bellica was one of the rule sets used:  the game being played with over 800 figures on a 12ft by 6ft table!  The figures were provided by Robert Avery, James Forrest (40 odd bases of Gauls!), John Hills, and Mike Tittensor.

A full scenario, battle report etc will be available on this website soon, but as the SoA write everything up in their excellent magazine Slingshot, I've agreed not to web-publish before them!

The best news, though, is that the Vis Bellica game won "best game" of the whole day.  I'd like to thank everyone who helped me set up and play the game:  I certainly enjoyed the day hugely.

PS  Anyone who isn't a member of the SoA should be!

19th February 2005

Downloads Peter Schulein of the Murphy's Heroes wargamers in the Nederlands has provided his own version of the VB tables for you to download.  Looks pretty good to me!

Battle Reports

Peter Schulein reports on an 850 point battle between the Indians and Palmyrans.  Sounds like a pretty bloody affair!

Army Statistics Battle result of the above added.

12th February 2005

Army Statistics Battle result added:  Thurlac's  re-fight of Platea. Went pretty much according to history right up to the point when Pausanias, King of Sparta, died in the assault on the Persian infantry. At the moment of getting into combat, the entire Greek army went into panicked retreat. Oops.

4th February 2005

Army Statistics Two results added to Army Statistics:  the Marian Romans, currently on a world tour, are in training for finally beating the Seleucids!

17th January 2005
