Robert Avery's 15mm Macedonians
|
After building my Hoplite Greek army (c.f.) it was a natural progression to building a Macedonian/Successor army, and so what is shown below are the additional elements added to turn my Hoplite Greeks into Macedonians; and then my Macedonians into Successors. The core of the army is, of course, the heavy cavalry and the pike, but I find the elephants and artillery can be very useful as well. When fielding Successors, I tend to field either an Asiatic or a Seleucid army i.e. adding in the various cavalry types: Skythians, Light Cavalry, and/or Agema. This gives me an army very strong in foot (the pike and levy hoplites) with a very strong cavalry arm as well. The only problem is that most of the cavalry is unshielded, so can suffer badly at the hands of opposition heavy in missile weapons. The Macedonian element of the army is once again Tin Soldier: and those pike blocks and lance-armed cavalry look really chunky on the tabletop! See the Hoplite Greek comments for more. The additional cavalry was actually painted by Andy Bryant for the SOA Gaugamela Day: the couldn't attend, but sent along his figures, which impressed me so much I made him an offer he couldn't refuse and bought them on the spot. Well, it saved on the postage to send them back to him! Click on the thumbnail to see the full size image: |
