Holger
is a Vis Bellica player based in Spain. In his own words:
"Attracted
by the chunky elements concept, about a year ago I purchased Vis Bellica and
started to paint two Hoplite armies in 28mm scale. Although, like all projects,
it suffered some delay, I have now finished painting and basing the armies of
Athens and Sparta. Altogether some 600 figures, 500 of them hoplites on nice
12x6cm bases (to give each hoplite his personalized shield I used all kinds of
transfers available in the market plus painting some easy designs).
"If you paint an
army during several months, painting styles develop and you will like
the last units more than the first ones. In the meantime I adopted the
"Three shades per colour" technique promoted by Wargames
Foundry which allowed me to develop with regards to quality and speed.
In addition, I discovered the marvellous LittleBigMenStudios Greek
shield designs when the armies were almost finished (they really speed
up the painting of units). I will therefore probably paint some more
bases of hoplites to use up my remaining stocks of shield transfers.
"Regarding the
Spanish heat: I'm working & living now for 12 years in Spain and I
really wish I had a chance to work in the UK (which by the way is the
Mecca for wargamers and people interested in military history). In
Madrid in summer you have to mix the colours with water every 10 seconds
to avoid them drying out. There is too much light, you are sweating and
it is healthier to live without air conditioning and to surrender to the
climate. It is really annoying when the climate in the afternoon does
allow little more than to sleep a siesta beneath a tree.
"Next projects: a Roman legion and some
ancient Germans, HYW French knights, perhaps Aztecs as well!"
